I fell in love with music very early as a kid, I'd say Michael Jackson started me off but I really got deep into it at School when I was around 9 years old with Jungle music (drum and bass) and Pop/ R&B. When I heard SWV "Right Here" for the first time, again I was around the same age. The MJ Human Nature beat, bro?! I just fell in love, including all 3 members of SWV! I've got a link to my personal playlist at the end of this article! So keep reading!
“I remember when I was 12 years old, I used to save my pocket money, like every penny so I could buy tapes and CDs... cassette tapes you know lol.”
Once I had the music bug, I couldn't stop! I found myself at music stores and boutiques just listening to music and admiring the artists and CD covers. Then later on I found out you could buy Soundtracks (OST) songs from movies! This was a big deal for me because movies especially triggers emotions! I waS like "Naaaaah, don't lie" lol. I remember the first time I had watched Above the Rim with Tupac (may his soul rest in peace). Speaking of Pac, I found out about him first from the movies, then came his music/ poetry. One of my favorite artists of all time!
Back then, I had a cassette recorder like many others. So I'd play the music from MTV Base and record it from the TV to the recorder ffs.
I stopped collecting football cards/ POGs or whatever my friends were doing and I just started to build a tape/ CD collection! The first CD I bought was Nicole Wray
(Make It Hot) 1998. Amazing artist and such a dope album!
By the the time I had started College, I bought my first PC which came with a CD-ReWriter, yep! You guessed it! I now had the power to copy/ burn music! Starts to sing *I GOT THE POWER* By SNAP! Bwahahahaha
Oh my days! I also got free design software, some of them were dead but 1 or 2 applications were decent, but it wasn't anything like Photoshop. I'd use this to create the front and back covers which I could then print. There wasn't eBay back then but some of my friends told me where I could buy the CD cases along with blank CDs. All of a sudden my collection got bigger and I was now creating my own mix CDs! It was lit! I even made mixes for friends!
My Top 10
Please understand, it took me a while to create this list! I may even go back to this from time to time to update it. I love music way too much to just get it down to 10 tracks but I thought I'd try! This is in no particular order, its too difficult! I could easily do my 'top 60' without any issue.
1. Tupac - Pain
2. Aaliyah - One In A Million
3. Total - Kissing You
4. Mc Lyte feat Xscape - Keep On, Keepin' On
5. Foxy Brown feat Blackstreet - Gotta' Get U Home
6. Mase feat Total - What You Want
7. BIG - Mo Money Mo Problems
8. Mary J Blige - Everything
9. R.Kelly - Down Low
10. 702 - Steelo
My mention of R.Kelly, understand I DO NOT agree with any of his views, actions or how he conducts himself. Like many others who got into R&B at a very young age because of him - we have to agree that musically, he is a genius. He is embedded in the R&B culture, he has way too many hits. Eminem is my favourite rapper but again I may not agree with all of his views but lyrically he is a living legend and his music is dope!
Not to mention many I've missed from the likes of Donell Jones, Kut Klose, Joe, Common, J Dilla, Usher, Lauren Hill, Janet Jackson, Keith Sweat, Changing Faces, Jon B, LL Cool J, Joe, TLC, Jodeci, Bell Div DeVoe, Nas, Dru Hill, 112, Puffy, EVE, Brownstone, Jennifer Lopez, Cube, New Edition, Jay-Z, Jade, 3LW, Next, Soul For Real, Monica, Kelly Rowland, Amerie, 50, Ashanti, Ruff Enz, Lil Kim, Montell Jordan, Gina Thompson, Jill Scott, DRE, Faith Evens, Tamia, Fabolous, DMX, Queen Pen, Brandy, Hi-Five, Kelis, Ginuwine, Myxx and etc.
