I used to spend hours on weekends just editing. Its difficult to spend all this time especially when you're not getting paid for it. My problem was that I am a perfectionist - I was always tried to make the the current video better than the last. Cinematics was a headache but was satisfying when executed. However this even started to affect my life.
“One day, I just stopped. I would do a video on an event and it would get a few hundred views after so much work but then with not much effort, I'd do an unboxing video and it would get over 100k+ views.”
I initially started my YouTube channel in 2012, the same time I had joined Instagram (IG came out in 2010). The reason I joined these socials were because I was custom building G-Shock watches. It was like the Nike ID concept, but with watches. I started to share some of my custom builds along with footage of my collection on YouTube. I was not consistent. I saw how big the G-Shock community online and I started to make so many friends. I used to get invited to some G-Shock events. When I was introduced to Head Office staff, I'd get so excited and speak to them about up and coming releases and even some models which were coming out next year lol. Yeah, they had no idea what I was talking about but were charmed enough to introduce me to more colleagues from Head Office lol. They were amazed how much I knew and how some stuff they had no idea about lol. I would have easliy left teaching and gone to work for G-Shock if given the opportunity. Clearly obsessed!
Much love to G-Shock UK/ London and Head Office.
When I stopped YouTube, I had so much good footage left over which was such a waste. This is why I have decided to come back and upload them but this time no fancy editing, just RAW and good footage. When I had stopped YouTube, I started to focus more on Instagram.
After a few years, I started to change my IG profile into more of a personal blog. I deleted 500+ photos of just watches, but kept a few as I wanted a reminder of the time stamp.
If you want to know how I re-branded/ changed my profile, please read my article "who is STAREMIX?" Pronounced as Star-Re-Mix by the way.
So at present I've found a way to keep my videos and vlogs very simple. Whatever I create now, its all done from my phone believe it or not. I no longer need to carry my camera with me everywhere I go, unless I am specifically doing product photography. Any vlogs I create, content from IG, I just export it, chop bits out I didn't need and upload it straight onto YouTube. I'd say about 1 week before the Government announced Lock-down, I had uploaded about 10 videos. Since being in self-isolation and working at home, I've uploaded about 20 videos in the space of 3 weeks and have even scheduled future videos at 1 to 2 ratio each week until early June. https://www.youtube.com/staremixsaad
I've still got a lot of content left to upload! Once all done... What will I now upload?! I will create/ share content which is valuable and informative for you guys. If there is no value why share it in the first place right? Will people share it?
All in all, I think back then I was just overwhelmed with all that I had going on. Teachers training, responsibilities, work and this brand. My advice, make your life easy by having a plan in place and sticking to it. Spread your time out on specific tasks. Ask your friends for help if you need it. Because you'll go crazy and just get overloaded like me. I spend 2-3 hours a day on socials, in this time I respond to emails, DMs, create/ prep content, write captions + hashtags/ tags.
Spend time on my friends and follower's content as well as being active in the communities I'm in. Once I am home, I've got 1hr left then I'm hardly on my phone unless there is a sneaker raffle and man is on edge cuzzy lol.
When I stopped YouTube I had over 1000 subscribers and over 400,000 views. I was appalled with these stats... Maybe my content was just not good enough? Or maybe I was just not consistent enough. Was I lazy with my content? I've just checked my stats now:
Subscribers: 1,347
Views: 630,000+
So I've got now until the end of 2020 to see how consistent I can be. As long as I can push 1-2 videos each week, I'm good. I'll be doing vlogs, cooking videos, unboxing, sneaker related content, food reviews and just me talking about stuff in front of the camera.
